On Saturday, March 19th, 2011 the moon came closer to the earth for the first time in 18 years. The full moon reached a point called 'Lunar Perigree', which is the point in the lunar cycle when the moon is closest to Earth, making it appear bigger and brighter. The moon was just 221,566 miles away from the Earth, (the moon averages about 238,857 miles away from the Earth during its orbit).
The next supermoon will occur on November 14, 2016.
